I don’t know about you, but I frequently find myself trapped in a sinking or sunken submarine. I thank the 1953 government for informing me of the ways to escape the tragedys I suffer through in daily submarine life.

We just had hoods that were supposed to entrap air around your head as you ascended. Everyone was pretty much aware that if you ever had to think about using the hood you were doomed anyway.
